Podcasts have been introduced to the MLWGS library. The two-minute-or-less recordings will offer previews for the books there, according to Mrs. Grois, who has taken on the project.

“[We wanted] to encourage more students – and teachers – to read and share good books with our school community,” she said. The idea is to create a forum within the school, and provide the opportunity to experiment with vocalization and presentation.

They will be recorded in the language lab, edited, and then uploaded onto the library’s website under the “Reading Den” tab.

“Your name will be up there,” said Mrs. Grois

So far, only Mr. O’Bryan has uploaded any trailers. But Mr. Benish is going to make one, and the door to room 241 is open for all who are interested.

“It’s hard to get people’s attention when they’re busy with schoolwork.” said Mrs. Grois.

To raise money for UNICEF’s “Eliminate Project”, the members of the MLWGS Key Club dressed up in Halloween costumes and conducted a school wide trick-or-treat donation on Monday October 31, 2011.

“Members are asked to go around to teachers, staff, and students and ask them to donate any spare change. The donations are collected in trick-or-treat boxes and all proceeds go to UNICEF” said Caroline Weakland(‘13), co-president of the Key Club.

Though donating through trick-or-treat is an annual affair at MLWGS, this year is the first where the Key Club has chosen to support UNICEF’S “Eliminate Project.” This plan aims to lessen the number of deaths caused by tetanus and improve maternal and neonatal care against this disease in impoverished countries.

“It’s great, I’ve gotten so many contributions from students, and the plus side is that anyone who donates gets to have candy too” said Galen Green(’15), a member of the MLWGS Key Club.

Indirect Lead:
Every nine minutes, one baby dies from an easily preventable disease- tetanus. Almost 60,000 babies and thousands of mothers die every year from this illness. The MLWGS Key Club, by conducting a trick-or-treat to support UNICEF’s “Eliminate Project”, hopes to reduce the number of deaths caused by this painful yet avoidable disease.

Coming back from an early shortcoming, the MLWGS Varsity Field Hockey team defeated rival Freeman High School 2-1 on Monday, October 21, securing them the #1 spot in the district.

Freeman won a previous match in the season and had been warring with the Lady Dragons for the regular season title. MLWGS, however, emerged victorious after what has been described as an "intense" match at Sportsquest.

"I think we've worked really hard, and we definitely deserved it," said Laura Fuhr, a midfielder on the MLWGS Field Hockey team, "They [the Freeman team] have good players, but we play at a faster tempo, and they just couldn't keep up with us."

The team then went on to become the Colonial District Tournament Champions on Friday, October 28, making this the first time in years that MLWGS has achieved both titles.

With so much success this season, one may wonder how the Lady dragons have managed to pull off such a feat.

"I think it's because that we always work really hard, and we always work well together. We have great team chemistry," said Eliza Bellamy ('15), also a midfielder on the team.

"It's a team effort," said Laura, "Everyone bonds and has trust in their teammates."

Regionals will begin this evening at Sportsquest, and if the team advances, the next game will take place on Wednesday, 6:30pm, at the same location.

Current eighth graders interested in MLWGS for high school are invited to attend three informational sessions held on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of November including a tour of the school and a presentation in the auditorium.

“I can barely remember [my open house] four years ago,” said Pooja Gandhi (’15), a student ambassador, “But based on the input we’ve got, it’s a very informative experience for the students and parents.” The event is being held to give interested students and their parents the MLWGS experience.

For the first time, it has been spread out over three nights versus two due to overcrowding. “There are [sessions] where students can ask MLWGS students questions, and essentially there are different speakers through the night like Mr. Tharp who talk about the school,” said Gandhi.

“I haven’t applied anywhere yet, but I want to apply [to MLWGS],” said Eden Momchilov, an eighth grader at Manchester Middle. When asked if she will be attending one of the open houses, Momchilov replied, “Hopefully. But I’m not completely positive yet.”
