Assignments for the 4th Week of the 1st Quarter

Tuesday: Preview weekly calendar. Spend time in class reading and discussing The Richmond Times-Dispatch. Share news ideas posted on the English Forum. Begin reading Chapter 2: "Laws, Ethics, and Policy" in-class. For homework,
  1. Finish reading Chapter 2 and complete study guide/vocabulary exercise.
  2. Begin researching your news-in-brief topic.
Thursday: Spend time in class reading and discussing The Richmond Times-Dispatch. Hand-in study guide/vocabulary exercise for Chapter 2: "Laws, Ethics, and Policy" and go over the answers. Discuss your progress in researching your news-in-brief article.
  1. Study for quiz on Chapter 2.
  2. Continue researching your news-in-brief topic.
Friday: Take quiz on Chapter 2: "Laws, Ethics, and Policy."
  1. Read a newspaper this weekend.
  2. Complete your news-in-brief and post it on the bulletin board. The article should have a direct lead, be 2-3 paragraphs long, and be no more than 100 words.

  1. Finish reading Chapter 1: "The Challenge of Journalism" and complete study guide/vocabulary exercise.
  2. Complete your news-in-brief and post it on the bulletin board. The article should have a direct lead, be 2-3 paragraphs long, and be no more than 100 words.
  3. Begin looking for news-in-brief topics.

Return to class and share items posted on the English Forum. Spend time in class reading and discussing The Richmond Times-Dispatch. For homework,
  1. Read Chapter 6: "The News Story" and complete the study guide/vocabulary exercises.
Thursday: Spend time in class reading and discussing The Richmond Times-Dispatch. Go over the answers to the study guide/vocabulary exercise for Chapter 6: "The News Story." Discuss news ideas from previous week and where to find information on them.

Assignments for the 1st Week of the 1st Quarter

Tuesday: View 50 Fun Things to Do... PowerPoint. Make index cards and work folders. Collect email addresses. Receive textbooks and fill-out book sheets. Receive and discuss syllabus. View and discuss Rules for Deportment PowerPoint. View Assignments Blog and other web resources. Interview Mr. Waller. For homework,
  1. Sign the last page of the syllabus and have your parents sign it, too.
  2. Join English Forum at MLWGS [http://mlwgsenglish.proboards31.com/] and post a greeting to the class with a one paragraph description of one of your hobbies. (Use your complete first and last names for the sign in.)
  3. Go to the Journalism Wikispace [http://wallerjournalism.wikispaces.com/], apply for membership, and post your name and email address.
  4. Bring in a news article from an actual newspaper (not one from on-line) and be prepared to summarize it verbally.
Thursday: Hand in signed syllabi. Check posts on the English Forum. Check entries on the Journalism Wikispace. Share and discuss articles. Read and discuss news articles in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. For homework,
  1. Post on the English Forum an idea for a news article about the Governor's School. This should be a 1-3 paragraph summary of what the article might address. The first person to post must start the thread, and no article ideas may be repeated.
  2. Read a newspaper over the weekend.
